The 22 Most Miserable Countries In The World

It's hard to get by when you don't have a job and the price of goods is rising.

That maxim is behind the dramatically named "Misery Index," which adds together a country's unemployment and inflation rates. The higher the number, the more "miserable" your country is.

The index was created by economist Arthur Okun, and it was an extremely popular measurement during the Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan presidencies.

There have been some criticisms of the misery index. Extensive studies have shown that unemployment influences happiness (or rather, unhappiness) significantly more than inflation.

Still, few would argue that both unemployment and inflation are bad when they are very high.

Bloomberg's Alex Tanzi compiled a list of the "most miserable countries" in the world according to this index. We highlight the 21 countries that scored 10 or higher.

Some famously miserable countries are noticeably absent from this list. Bloomberg left them off because either the unemployment rate or inflation rate (or both) were absent or dated. But we thought we'd share them with you anyway.

Billions Of Strange-Looking Blue Animals Are Washing Up On The West Coast

Billions of small, jellyfish-like creatures known as “by-the-wind sailors” have washed ashore all along the west coast of North America this summer, from southern California to British Columbia. Images of vast swarms of electric-blue sails covering the ocean’s surface and littering the sand are indeed spectacular, but people might well wonder what exactly these strange-looking beings actually are. And this of course leads to the next question – should we be afraid of them?Velella
Velella velella (to give them their scientific name) are often assumed to be a type of jellyfish but, while biology does lump them in with jellyfish, sea anenomes, and corals in a group known as Cnidaria, Velellas are not all that closely related to the common or moon jellyfish, Aurelia aurita.

Cnidarians have two body forms: the umbrella-shaped, tentacle-trailing “medusa”, your classic jellyfish; and “polyps” such as seas anemonies that typically live attached to the seabed.Velella is a colony of specialised individual polyps, much like their fellow sailors the Portuguese Man o' War. Instead of living attached to rocks on the seabed, the water surface has become its substrate.

The by-the-wind sailor’s body is a flat oval disk 6-7 cm in diameter containing a series of air-filled chambers that provide buoyancy. Below hangs a central mouth surrounded by specialised reproductive bodies that produce tiny medusae, little “jellyfish”, and stinging tentacles – which are harmless to humans.

Projecting vertically up is a stiff translucent triangular vane made of chitin, a substance derived from glucose that is also used in crab and insect skeletons or squid beaks. This vane acts like a small sail. Interestingly, the sail runs diagonally across the top of the float, so that the individual sails at a 45 degree angle to the prevailing wind, just like a sailing boat.

Another striking feature is the bright blue colour, which is thought to serve as camouflage and/or protection from the sun’s rays. Animals that wash up on the beach dry up and become bleached white within a day or two.

Velella velella use their stinging tentacles to capture and feed on small fish larvae and zooplankton – microscopic animals that drift in the sea. But this is not their only source of food. If you look closely, you will also see a golden-brown colour inside the tissues which are zooxanthspellae – symbiotic photosynthetic microalgae – that provide the host animal an additional source of nutrition.

Incredible! This Conjoined Twins Refuse To Be Separated

Conjoined-twins-Shivnath-and-Shivram-3397064
Conjoined twins Shivanath and Shivram Sahu have found a unusual way to get to school – dropping to the floor and running like a SPIDER.
The 12-year-olds, who were born joined at the waist, share two legs and four arms and work in tandem to get around.
The duo have stunned doctors with their ability to wash, dress and feed themselves – and say they are determined never to be parted.
Shivram said: “We don’t wish to get separated. We will stay like this even when we grow old. We want to live as we are.”
The pair were born in a tiny village near Raipur in central India.
Their arrival caused quite a stir with some villagers even worshipping them as divine incarnations.
A local doctor told the family they were both healthy but he could not separate them.
They are believed to share the same stomach but have independent lungs, hearts and brains.
With practice they have learned to do all their basic daily chores with minimal fuss, including showering, eating, getting dressed and combing each other’s hair.
They are able to walk down the stairs of their simple split-level home and even run on all six limbs to play cricket and other games with neighbouring children.
Shivanath, who appears to be the weaker of the two twins, said: “We have taught ourselves everything. We ride to school on a bicycle and playing cricket is no problem.”
They are also talented academics and considered among the top students at their local school, much to the pride of their doting father, Raj Kumar, 45.
The labourer, who is married to Srimati and has five daughters, is very protective of his two sons and will not allow them to leave the village.

U.S investigators believe that the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 communication system were shut off manually and that the plane flew for at least 5 more hours after it dropped off the radar based on analysis of signals sent by the jet's satellite communication link.

U.S counterterrorism officials are pursuing the possibility that a pilot or someone else on board the plane may have diverted it toward an undisclosed location after intentionally turning off the jetliner's transponders to avoid radar detection, according to one person tracking the probe.
